Adam Montague

Adam lives in St. Louis in a large house with his wife, four kids, one housemate, two dogs, one cat, one turtle and an endless stream of people coming and going.  Though a closet introvert, he loves people and always tries to find a way to remind himself and those he interacts with that we are all human and we can love that about each other.  He likes to play games, relentlessly trying to integrate technology and life, and building things out of wood. If you find yourself in St. Louis, let him know and he’ll gladly buy you a drink!

In the beginning…

The story of the EWWW Image Optimizer began shortly after my son was born in 2012. I love web development, and saw a need for an image optimization plugin that would work (reliably) on sites using shared hosting. I created EWWW IO (forked from the CW Image Optimizer) to help folks, like me, who needed an easier way to optimize the images on their site. After 500 downloads in a week, I knew the need was big. Soon, I began bundling a set of pre-built tools: jpegtran, optipng, and gifsicle. The user-base continued to grow, but the mess of Linux distributions and operating systems in use by various web hosts made it impossible for everyone to take advantage of EWWW IO.

On September 24, 2013 I launched the Compress API which allowed everyone to use EWWW IO. It filled in the gaps that couldn’t be filled by the free plugin. The Compress API made image optimization accessible to a whole knew audience, and allowed the API users to share the cost of offloading image optimization to third-party servers. In 2014, the Compress API expanded to include the best lossy compression engine in existence: Tinify (makers of TinyPNG and TinyJPG).

Now way back in 2012, I had a choice to make. I could provide EWWW IO with absolutely no commitment, no support, just “as-is”. Or I could try to help the folks who were trying to use this plugin that I had built. My Grandpa was the type of person to help you with anything he could. He was such a servant to family and friends (and even people he just met), that we would have to keep from telling him things because he would try to do more than he was physically able to handle. He couldn’t see a need and NOT fill it. That kind of passion for helping people is contagious, and I couldn’t just sit by and watch people that needed help making their sites faster. From the very beginning, I’ve done what I could to help everyone using EWWW IO, and to this day our mission is all about helping people.

In short, EWWW IO is about making image optimization available to everyone, and helping you achieve success in making your website as fast as possible. Whether your website is just a job, a hobby, or your passion, we’re here to help make your masterpiece shine.
